In the film, a teenager is thrust into adulthood when desperate family circumstances compel him to enter a lucrative yet dangerous cross-country sled dog race. It is based on the true story of the 1917 Red River to St. Paul Derby – a 522-mile-long event from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Saint Paul, Minnesota, as part of the St. Paul Winter Carnivale.
